Indiana Fields Contemporary Impressionism Landscape Painting
"Soybean Fields" 6"x6" oil on panel. Once in a while I will have a day where I spend more time trying to figure out what I want to paint than I actually spend time painting. I think this happens if I get in a rut. This explains why somedays I will paint cow after cow and then all of a sudden I throw in a beach scene or some other subject matter. Most days I just start painting shortly after I enter the studio. Otherwise, I would have a whole lot of nothing! I have had a few people ask me how do I find time to paint everyday. I recently responded in one of my posts: "I don't know. I wish I could paint more :) but I am grateful when I do. Somedays the laundry piles up and the dust bunnies unite. I heard a saying once, "the less time you have, the more you get done" I find this very true."

"City Sidewalks" 8"x8" oil on panel. After the sun went down the sky was still a very royal blue. The perfect backdrop for the holiday lights. This is the first time I have painted on this size, it seems considerably larger than the 6"x6" I am used to in my daily painting. A fun, colorful, contemporary piece. "Chicago Theater Sign" 6"x6" oil on panel. whew! Paintings of architecture are always a challenge and can be rewarding. My goal is to keep it fresh and not get caught up in too many details. I live a few hours from Chicago and am always inspired to paint this beautiful city.

Contemporary Urban Landscape City Rainy Downtown Large Painting 11"x14"
"Industrial Gray" 11"x14" oil on canvas board (Raymar) I enjoyed the challenge of the subtle values of cold and warm grays in this painting. I love how the street lights and car lights reflect on the wet roads. Call me melancholy, but I love rainy days. Just not too many in a row.

Winter Landscape Snow December Woods Painting

"First Snow" This is what I woke up to this morning. Our first snow of the season. The kids were pretty excited. It wasn't a "snow day" but their buses were running late. Painting snow can be tricky especially in the woods. You dont want to get too busy with details yet capture the delicate branches and somber grays. This painting is 6"x6" oil on panel.

Crows in Golden Wheat Painting Wheatfield Autumn Trees Landscape Contemporary Impressionism

"Crows in Golden Wheat" 6"x6" oil on masonite. The autumn trees and fields were golden especially in the sunlight. The contrast of the black crows was breathtaking. Of course anytime I see crows feasting in the fields I immediately think of Van Gogh or Tipi Hedron in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"

"Calm before the Storm" We had left the Grand Canyon and were heading towards Colorado. Seeing the Southwest for the first time is hard to put in words. You see the land in pictures but not until you see everything in person are you really amazed. I grew up around corn and soybean fields. I am used to seeing storms roll in but nothing like this. The formations and elevations made me feel like I had landed on another planet. I have always loved Edgar Payne's amazing paintings of the west, now I see his inspiration first hand. This is one of just a few large pieces posted on this blog it is 11"x14" on Raymar canvas board. click on "southwest" label below to see similar paintings
